TAFE SWSi apprentice judged the best in the state!
Self-confessed “high achiever” Brodie Oakes won the Apprentice of the Year Award at the 2015 NSW Training Awards on Wednesday, 9 September 2015.
Brodie is an apprentice mechanical fitter who is studying engineering at TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute (TAFE SWSi) while completing his apprenticeship though MEGT Australia Ltd and host employer, Quenos Ltd.
Brodie will complete his apprenticeship next January while also completing a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade at TAFE SWSi Miller College and Mechanical Engineering and Certificate IV Engineering - Hydraulics and Pneumatics at Lidcombe College.
Brodie said he felt “on top of the world” after the win which would help him secure a future in a trade which he loved.
“Any school leaver seeking an apprenticeship should definitely contact their local TAFE,” he said. You can literally lean any skills which you feel you require for your future career at TAFE. Your future is in your hands and TAFE is your gateway.”
Brodie obviously drew inspiration from his father who was also a mechanical fitter.
“I’ve always been a high achiever and aimed to excel in all that I do,” he said. “Completing a Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship has been a great kick start to my career and I work on some of the most complex process systems within Australia in an industry I thoroughly enjoy being part of.”
Jason Porter, his team leader at host employer Quenos, who manufacture and supply polyethylene and polymers, said Brodie was a “self-motivated individual who has a thirst for understanding how things work”.
“Brodie, throughout his apprenticeship has shown maturity beyond his years by continuing to self-improve and challenge himself,” Mr Porter said. “He has continually and without waiver developed his skills and proven competent in many facets of his trade.”
